In the story, La Ciudad, we are introduced to a man named Francisco who is seen roaming the streets of the city in hopes of finding his uncle. Throughout the film, we are given an insight on the struggle Francisco himself endured, as the story showcases his confusion on the whereabouts of his uncle. With little knowledge of the city, he notices how vast the city is when he leaves the apartment of the girl he met at a party whose name is Maria. Francisco thought it’d be romantic to go out and buy breakfast for her, but he gets lost when trying to return with the food he bought. While noticing the immense differences between his hometown in Mexico and New York City, he becomes frightened as he is surrounded by large and intimidating buildings at the end of the story. As the scene comes to an end we are left wondering if he ever found her apartment building. The cliffhanger itself allows us viewers to experience the sense of loss endured by immigrants when entering a large city that is unknown to them.Throughout the story, we get an insight of Francisco and Maria’s feelings towards the intimidating city. Francisco and Maria both mention that they feel isolated as they are completely unaware and confused on how to function in foreign grounds. Francisco mentions that the party he met Maria in was what drew him in, due to the loudness of his cultural music, the presence of his own people, and the food. I, too, felt a sense of “home” when the film showcased the party because it reminded me of the many birthdays I celebrated with my family which would drag on all night as it did in the story. The feeling of nostalgia overwhelmed me as it did Francisco for he felt like he finally belonged somewhere. During the party, Maria and Francisco isolate themselves by going backdoors, which causes Francisco to comment on how “the city is now sleeping”. The silence of the city brings peace to both characters which allows them to feel comfortable enough to express how they feel whilst their stay in the city.
