The story depicts the immigrant experience in New York City as foreign. Francisco migrated from Mexico to NYC in search for his uncle, to be able to work and buy a house for himself. As he tells Maria his plans, she believes these dreams are illogical because Francisco has this idea that America is easy. Where you just work to save money and purchase anything at any expense. The characters in the story only speak Spanish, some may say a few words in English but its predominately Spanish spoken in these communities. The language keeps the community together, it gives them a sense of “home”. Home is a sanctuary and with everyone with the same culture and traditions it’s a home away from home.

The film’s lighting, shadows, music, angle shots and other film strategies give the film a sense of drama. There are scenes in the film where Francisco and Maria are dancing together at the party and the shots are zoomed into their faces, for a more dramatic affect. Or when Francisco is at Maria’s house that night and he asks for consent to give her a kiss. Maria says yes and they kiss and the film shot zooms in on their expressions. The shot stays on Maria’s facial expression because throughout most of the scenes in the film Maria is timid or uptight. The film being in black and white, gives it an old school feel.
